Alternative to Suspension
ASP provides an alternative to out-of-school
suspension for students who receive a suspension for three or more days. The
goals of the program are to reduce recidivism and down-time for students during
suspensions. Students who participate in the program reduce their number of
suspended days in exchange for participating in community service projects.
Students with out-of-school suspensions for more than five days also receive
academic assistance for completing missed school work, anger management, team
building exercises, substance abuse prevention classes and counseling to improve
interpersonal skills. Projects range from assisting county and municipal parks
and recreation departments, the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland
Conservation Corps in beautification projects to assisting Goodwill Industries
and other non-profits.
